How to shoot a Covid wedding

Aug 25, 2020

Shooting a wedding this summer? Worried about the virus? Here are our top Covid wedding tips:

  • If they're having a wedding beyond the legal limits (eg too many guests) tell them you feel uncomfortable and suggest shorter coverage so you don't have to be there longer than you feel comfortable
  • Short coverage is a good option so that you don't have to shoot prep or anything else in close quarters. We've started at the ceremony for our weddings this summer
  • People talk about insurance being invalid if you shoot an non-compliant wedding, so check yours
  • Wear a mask even if no one else is. This reminds them to stay the fuck away from you
  • Fold a Kleenex up along the top edge of the mask to stop your viewfinder and glasses from steaming up
  • Bring a second shooter so you don't have to dash through crowds to get to the action
  • Manage expectations - this is a big one. Tell your couple what you expect from them and how you'll be working
  • Tell them to nominate someone to organise the group photos
  • Do group shots far away from the action so Uncle Bob isn't over your shoulder (in the wedding below there was literally an Uncle Bob - real name - stepping in front of me to get my group shot, as the whole wedding took place in a tiny car park!)
  • Put families in bubbles for group shots
  • Tell them if you feel unsafe you will be stepping away and keeping a distance
  • Confetti and bubbles - pockets of Covid flying in your face? No thanks! Suggest your couple get a bubble machine
  • Elbow bumps - grooms seem to love these, but they mean your face is  a foot away from theirs. Get an enthusiastic wave in there before they can get close to you
  • Address it at the start of the day so they remember where you're at - "I won't come and hug you, but hello/congrats!!" *make hug gesture*
  • Have fun - these mini weddings are actually fab!
  • You're documenting a moment in history, so enjoy it.
